Great River Days adds new events

Master event schedule updated

With less than two weeks to go before the 52nd Annual Great River Days festival, organizers and sponsors alike have been busy finalizing details and new events to be added to the event schedule, July 28-31 2010 on the Muscatine Riverfront.

On Wednesday evening July 28, White Owl Productions will host an amateur dance contest called “Compete with the Beat” featuring five age groups, with trophies for the best pop, couples, and line dancing awarded. Following the new direction for the GRD event, there is no entry fee to participate in the contest, and the in-person sign-up will start at 8PM in Riverfront Park.

Then on Saturday July 31 from 1-3PM, event sponsor Muscatine Foods Corporation will host seminars and field dog training demonstrations featuring Steve Ries, a Field Specialist for Kent Nutrition Group. Steve and wife Jodie own “Top Gun Kennels” in Central City Iowa, and regularly works with top canine breeders and performance dog trainers throughout the country.

Kids activities added for Saturday include a new event called “Scoop for Prizes”. Participants will sift for prizes such as Fun City certificates; die cast toys and other gifts for the first 100 participants. The kids event is sponsored by “The World’s Best Cat Litter”, another of the Muscatine Foods Corporation family of companies.

Also added on Saturday afternoon at 3PM, is the First Annual “Wiener Doggy Dash”, which as the name implies, are dascshund races. The dogs will negotiate a 50 foot race course, with cash prizes and trophies for the winning wieners. Full details and entry forms can be found on the www.GreatRiverDays.com website, or in person at Happy Joe’s north restaurant in Muscatine.
Details of the Sunday August 1 Great River Days Bass Tournament have also been released. Check in for the tournament will be at 430AM, at the main Riverfront Park boat ramp. For specific information, contact Brian Freyermuth at 563-264-8178.

The advance community and sponsor participation in this year’s Great River Days festival has necessitated that an updated “Master Schedule” has been placed on the GreatRiverDays.com website.

Event co-chairman JJ Koehler commented, “The event schedule is now complete. We have many free activities and things going on July 31, especially for kids. From the time the parade starts at 11, through the Kentucky Headhunters’ concert that evening at 9:30, it will be a fun time for kids of all ages. There is no general admission button this year, and we expect that will really increase the attendance overall. The event sponsors have really stepped forward to make this an affordable, fun family event, and we could not have done it without their support.” he concluded.
